(a) write a balance equation, including phase tags, describing the reaction: sodium hydrogen carbonate and acetic acid reacted to form aqueuos sodium acetate, water, and dioxide gas.

(b) what kind of reaction is this?

Homework Answers

Answer #1

a) balanced chemical reaction is

CH3COOH(aq) + NaHCO3(s)   CH3COONa(aq)  + CO2(g) + H2O(l)

b) this reaction take place in two steps

in first step

CH3COOH(aq) + NaHCO3(s)   CH3COONa(aq)  + H2CO3(aq)

this is double displacement reaction because Na trades partner H atom of CH3COOH

in second step

carbonic acid formed decompose to water and carbondioxide thus this step is decomposition reaction.

H2CO3(aq)    CO2(g) + H2O(l)
