A child who weighs 25 kg is receiving IV ampicillin 300 mg/kg/24 hours in equally divided doses every 4 hours. How many mgs should the nurse administer to the child for each dose?
FOR DOSAGE TO BE ADMINISTERED THE FOLLOWING STEPS SHOULD BE FOLLOWED :
1.convert weight to kg if given in other units.
Here it's already the given weight is
in kg = 25kg
2.Convert the dose in mg :
25kg x 300mg/kg/24hours = 7500mg/24hours
3.Divide the dose by frequency:
Every 4 hours the dose should be administered so for 24 hrs the dose should be given 6 times
7500mg/24hrs divide by 6 = 1250mg/dose
CONCLUSION:
THE NURSE SHOULD ADMINISTER 1250 mgs FOR EACH DOSE
