What are two ways in which you might lose some cinnamaldehyde during the steam distillation procedure?

Answer #1

Distillation is a procedure that is employed to seperate the substances from the mixture of compounds.

The substance seperates out as distillate before the boiling point of the water is attained. Now since some amount of cinnamaldehyde decomposes before it reaches its boiling point , not all of the material as pure substance can be obtained through it .

Now since the product is seperated in the form as oil , having high viscosity , it stuck to the collection jars and instruments in the experiment , which also caused to loss of some product.

3. The steam distillation was run long enough to be able to isolate a measurable quantity of cinnamaldehyde, but not all the way to completion. (in other words, it is likely that you did not extract all of the cinnamaldehyde from the cinnamon sticks). Which of the following results would provide clear, unambiguous evidence that all of the cinnamaldehyde contained in the cinnamon sticks had been isolated by the steam distillation process? (5) The boiling point of limonene is 176 ºC. You purified it by steam distillation, which allowed isolation at lower temperature. Why was this successful (hint - look up the term "azeotrope")? (6) Another possible method of purification would be column chromatography. Compare the structure of limonene to that of biphenyl (experiment 3). What solvent mixture would you use to purify limonene by column chromatography?
