In organic chem lab (steam distillation), the eugenol and water distillate you collect is apt to be cloudy, particularly the first part of this distillate. Please explain why.
Also, why does the eugenol move from the water layer to the dichloromethane layer during extraction?
The first fraction of the distillation will be water and the second fraction will be eugenol. It is because water (100 °C) is having the lower boiling point in comparison with eugenol (254 °C). In the first fraction, that compound will come which will have the lower boiling point.
As know, the solubility of water in the organic compound is significant. Since dichloromethane is an organic polar solvent so eugenol will transfer from water portion to it during extraction. It will because of more miscibility of eugenol in dichloromethane which may be due to like dissolve like principle.
