In the reduction of camphor to isoborneol experiment, list two ways in which you might monitor the reaction to indicate that the reaction is complete. What could you do to push the reaction to completion?

Homework Answers

Answer #1

Camphor have a Ketone functionality and corresponding reduced product isoborneol have secondary alcohol functionality.

Based upon these two important facts we can analyze the raction progress by either way for example, by

TLC observation: Rf valu for reactant (ketone) would be mre than product (alcohol) because of polarity difference.

NMR: Presence of new signal for CH-OH in 1HNMR and new signal belonging to CH-OH in 13 CNMR.

IR: absence of stretching frequency in the region ~1600-1750 cm-1

If there is presence of reactant (ketone) is beeing observed by either tools, then reaction can be extended for more time or some more reducing agent can be added.
