Why is caffeine attracted to methylene chloride?
methylene chloride has some dipole moment. so it has polar nature.
some parts of caffeine have polar nature which allow the solubility of caffeine in methylene chloride.
this concept is used to extract caffeine from its source. caffeine is insoluble in water. because water molecules have strong intermoleculer forces between them.those intermoleculer forces are hydrogen bondings...
but caffeine is not so polar to be soluble in water. because to soluble in water it should form strong interaction with water molecules. but majority of caffeine molecule is non polar organic moiety. so it is insoluble in water.
but it is soluble in caffeine . so caffeine is attracted to methylene chloride.
