I understand the concept and the postulates of the Hardy-Weinberg equation/equilibrium concept. Is this typically used to only form hypotheses for what "could" happen in nature? I guess I'm confused as to the actual application of this equation, since all of those postulates actually being met in nature would be rare or impossible to the point of the outcome "equilibrium". Or can this be used, and then more equations "added in" to account for known variations when trying to form a hypothesis?

Answer #1

According to HARDY- WEINBERG principle ,

Allele frequencies in a randomly mating population are stable and is constant from generation to generation.gene pool remain constant. This is called genetic equilibrium.

Sum total of all the allelic frequencies is 1.

P+ q =1

Where p - frequency of dominant allele , q- frequencies of recessive allele.

P Square+2pq+ q square =1

P square - freq of individual with genotype AA,

q square - freq of individual with genotype aa

2pq- freq of individuals with genotype Aa

* 5 factors are known to affect HARDY-WEINBERG equilibrium . These are -

1)gene migration or gene flow 2) genetic drift. 3) mutation. 4)genetic recombination. 5) natural selection.
