Draw the lewis structure for SbF4 +

Draw the lewis structure for SbF4 +

Homework Answers

Answer #1

Drawing a Lewis structure

1.  Determine the total number of valence electrons in a molecule

2.  Draw a skeleton for the molecule which connects all atoms using only single bonds.

3. Count how many electrons are required to make the skeleton with two electrons/single bond. . Consider the remaining electrons and place them so as to fill the ocets of as many atoms as possible (start with the most electronegative atoms first ).

4. Are the octets of all the atoms filled?   If not then fill the remaining octets by making multiple bonds.

5. If the molecule is charged, add an electron for each negative charge and subtract an electron for each positive charge.

The electronic configuration of Sb (Antimony) is

[Kr] 4d105s25p3 The number of valence electrons is 5

Number of valence electrons in each F is 7 = 4 x 7 = 28 + 5 = 33 electrons

Since the molecule is positively charge 33 -1 = 32 electrons

The skeleton is

So 8 electrons are used up

Remaining 24 electrons are remaining which will be place 3 pairs each total 6 each on every fluorine. Then add the positive charge to the structure.

How to draw the lewis structure for O3 and identify the Major contributor? because it has resonance structure. Also, my teacher said if the formal charge are same in lewis structure, we should pick the O- to be the Major, but what if we see an example that one O- and O+ appear in the resonance structure. Should we pick the O- to be Major contributor or the O+?
