Question

. Which of the labeled hydrogen atoms in the following structure is the most acidic?

. Which of the labeled hydrogen atoms in the following structure is the most acidic?

Homework Answers

Answer #1

Ans: Acidic' means, it has tendency to be released as H+ ion (or H atom without its only electron).

So, if any H-atom is attached to another atom or group of atoms with higher electronegativity, that H-atom is a potential acidic H-atom.

-Protons on carbon are rarely the most acidic because carbon is not very electronegative. Look at protons on more electronegative atoms first O, N, S etc first.

-Always alpha hydrogens are acidic in nature. We know alpha hydrogen is linked to alpha carbon that is first carbon of a chain. So number of hydrogens linked to alpha carbon will give you acidic hydrogens.

-For Acidic Strength: Alkane < alkene < NH3 < Alkyne < alcohol < Water < Phenol < Nitrophenol < H2CO3 < RCOOH < Benzoic acid < HCOOH < Picric Acid.
