Draw all possible Lewis dot structure for methyl azide. Include all hydrogen atoms and nonbonding electrons. Show the formal charges of all atoms.

Answer #1

Methyl azide

Molecular Formula CH3N3

The following simple rules may be conveniently used to draw the structure of the Azide ion and hence Methyl azide.

1.If the valency of N is 3, in a compound, it will be neutral and carry one lone pair of electrons ( Recall the structure of Ammonia molecule with one lone pair of electron on the N atom)

2. If the valency of N is 4, in a compound, it will be unipositive and carry no lone pair of electrons( Recall the structure of Ammonium ion NH4+ ion with positive charge and no lone pair of electron on the N atom)

3. If the valency of N is 2, in a compound, it will be uninegative and carry two lone pair of electrons
