What is the lifetime of odd oxygen via chlorine catalysis?

What is the lifetime of odd oxygen via chlorine catalysis?

Homework Answers

Answer #1

Free oxygen & ozone molecules are rapidly interconverted regarded as the sum of the two as a family of odd oxygen

denoted Ox. The source of odd oxygen is the photolysis of oxygen molecules & the loss of odd oxygen in the reaction of ozone with oxygen atoms.

Reactive chlorine compds include Cl(free Cl atom) & ClO( Cl monoxide).

The two reactions are

Cl+ O3 = ClO+ O2

ClO + O= Cl + O2

Net reaction - O3+ O = 2O2

net effect is to convert 2 molecules of odd oxygen into 2 molecules of molecular oxygen while conserving the sum of reactive Cl.

The life time of odd oxygen in a parcel of air is much longer than the life time of an individual Oatom or O3 molecule.
