Explanation of what happens when you add SCN to FeSCN2+
Thiocyanato iron (2+) is a pentahydrate, with octahedral structure can be taken as pentaaquathiocyanatoiron(II) .
This is used as test for IronIII , where iron III reacts with thiocyanate to give a series of intensely red colored compounds that remain in solution.
As we go on adding SCN- ion to this, the water molecules in the complex progressively get replaced by SCN and finally we get hexathiocyanato iron, a stable octahedral complex which further does not react.
