What is the chemical equation when benzophenone is reduced to diphenylmethanol with NaBH4, and why is HCl added in the end?

Homework Answers

Answer #1

NaBH4 given hydride ion which is strong necleophile. Relatively electropositive carbon in carbonyl group is attached by this hydride ion can open one carbon oxygen bond due to avoid pentavalency.

Once carbon oxygen -carbon bond is broken oxygen bear negative charge which is neutralized by proton that is the reason we need HCl in the end of the reaction.

Lets show the reaction by using structure and then write chemical equation for this.

C13H10O + NaBH4 + HCl -- > C13H11O + NaCl +BH3

For Reduction of Vanillin aldehyde to Vanillyl alcohol using Nabh4, Aqueous NaOH and HCl If you incorrectly add acid and do not attain a pH of 1, your yield may be lower than it should be as some of your product would not be isolated. Why won’t it be isolated? Notes: This addition of HCl causes four reactions to occur: a. it hydrolyzes the O-B bond in the intermediate and protonates the oxygen atom that was originally the oxygen atom...
