what is the solubility of benzophenone with these: 5%HCL, NAHCO3 AND H2SO4
Benzophenone has structure
Benzophenone is an aromatic ketone.
Solubility of benzophenone:
1) In 5% HCl : Benzophenone will be insoluble in 5% HCl solution. In 5% HCl only amine get solublied as the solution is enough acidic (i.e. with enough protons) that protonates amino (-NH2 groug) and forms -NH3+ which being charged get solvated in aqueous phase.
2) NaHCO3 : Benzophenone will be insoluble in NaHCO3 solution. In NaHCO3 only acids with ionizable -COOH(carboxylic) group will be soluble as NaHCO3 is weak base. As Benzophenone doesn't have such ionizable -COOH group it is insoluble in NaHCO3 solution.
3) conc. H2SO4 : Benzophenone will be soluble in conc. H2SO4as it is strongly acidic able to prtonate carbonyl O in benzophenone making it a charged species and solvalizing it in aqueous phase.
