A gas mixture contains 0.75mol of N2 0.25mol of H2, and 0.40mol of CH4. Calculate the pressure of the gas mixture and the partial pressure of each constituent gas mixture and the partial pressure of each constituent gas if the mixture is in a 12.0L vessel at 27 celsius.

Homework Answers

Answer #1

PV = nRT                                             (mole fraction of N2 = 0.75/1.4 = 0.536

n = 0.75 + 0.25 + 0.40 = 1.4                mole fraction of H2 = 0.25/1.4 = 0.178

P = (1.4 X 0.0821 X 300)/12                mole fraction of CH4 = 0.4/1.4 = 0.286)

= 2.87 atm (pressure of the gas mixture)

Partial Pressure of N2 = mole fraction X total pressure = 0.536 X 2.87 = 1.54 atm

Partial Pressure of H2 = 0.178 X 2.87 = 0.511atm

Partial Pressure of CH4 = 0.286 X 2.87 = 0.821 atm
