Organic chemistry reagent question?

Br2/ 2-3 equivs of NaNH2/ NH3 (l) what does it do?

Answer #1

NaNH2 is a strong base and excellent nucleophile. It’s used for deprotonation of weak acids and also for elimination reactions.

An application of NaNH2 happens in the formation of alkynes from halogens. Treatment of either geminal dihalides (i.e. – two halogens on one carbon) or vicinal dihalides (halogens on adjacent carbons) with NaNH2 (2 equiv) will result in the formation of alkynes.

Since vicinal dihalides are easily made by the reaction of alkenes with halogens such as Br2 or I2, this is a useful way of converting alkenes to alkynes.

Hello I have a question about organic chemistry 1 lab. When doing chemical tests the Br2 in CCl4. Shows a positive result for alkenes and alkynes? And negative test results mean a alkene and/or arene? I’m told in lab that we do not have potassium permanganate so we cannot use it. The second test that were told to preform if nothing else is shown on the IR is a halide test. I hope this makes sense. I’m just confused about...

Organic Chemistry Question This question is about an extraction experiment with the compounds biphenyl and 2-chlorobenzoic acid. A student, when conducting this experiment overlooked the instruction "Repeat steps 2 and 3 above two more times with fresh 2 mL portions of sodium bicarbonate solution." Upon conducting TLC analysis, this student found that the final isolated biphenyl was contaminated with some 2-chlorobenzoic acid. Explain, on a molecular level, how and why this student's error led to poor separation. Be specific.
