Organic Chemistry Lab: Distillation.

a.) In vacuum distillation, how you do ensure that the liquid does not boil too suddenly upon reduction of pressure?

b.) When carrying out a fractional distillation,

i.) What is the ideal boiling point difference for the two components of the mixture you are distilling?

ii.) what needs to be adjusted if the boiling point difference is smaller than above?

Homework Answers

Answer #1

a) in Vacuum distillation, reducing the pressure and taking care that it does not go below its vapour pressure we can be sure that the liquid does not boil too suddenly.

b)i) Generally the component parts have boiling points that differ by less than 25 °C from each other under a pressure of one atmosphere. If the difference in boiling points is greater than 25 °C, a simple distillation is typically used.

ii) for this, we have to increase the number of chambers in the distillation setup

The question is taken from Organic Chemistry lab assigment, Simple and Fractional Distillation. There are no tables, plots, or diagrams; just a quesiton. "Flooding" the packed column during fractional distillation reduces the ability to separate two liquids with similar boiling points. How would a visible liquid phase in the colimn reduce its efficiency?

For Organic chemistry lab: Distillation: 1. If the heat source in a distillation is a heating mantle, why should it be set in a holder so it isn’t resting on the bench top? Would a stirring hot plate have to be held above the bench top? Why must the distilling flask be clamped so it cannot fall? Imagine some problem occurring that requires you to immediately remove the heat from the distilling flask. Think about this, then go back to...

how does a vacuum reduce atmospheric pressure? boiling chips and vacuum distillation, respectively, are used in distillations to: A. provide nucleation sites that give the liquid a place to start forming bubbles to prevent super-heating; lower the boiling points of the substances to be distilled. B. lower the boiling points of the substances to be distilled; to work synergistically with the vacuum system to further lower the boiling points. C. lower the boiling points of the substances to be distilled;...

Hi, organic chemistry folks! Can someone edit my short paragraph about my experiment on simple distillation of an unknown organic liquid. It needs to be concise, clear, intepreted, and contain relevant values. Hopefully, I did those but I'm just having trouble wording it all together. Thanks! The purpose of this laboratory experiment was to purify and identify a volatile organic liquid of unknown #3 by performing a simple distillation technique. The purified unknown #3 was characterized via BP and IR....

Lab 9 – Molecular Biology In this lab, you will prepare an agarose gel and use gel electrophoresis to compare the size of 2 dye molecules Methyl orange and Ponceau G. You will also analyze an “unknown” sample that contains a mixture of two dyes. Dye molecules with lower molecular weight or greater electrical charge will migrate faster through the gel, than dye molecules with greater molecular weights or lesser electrical charge. Materials: Mini gel electrophoresis chamber 6 Tooth comb...

I have provided the information for the lab below. I want to see the chemical reactions that take place during each step of the experiment. So in the procedures when a chemical was added i would like to see what the products and byproducts that were formed. I also want to see one over all reaction for this experiment to just get an overview of what exactly is happening during the experiment. Thank you:) Part B: Synthesis of [Co(NH3)5Cl]Cl2 Objective:...
