What does crude mean ?

Does it mean wet- weight

or Dry weight of the product?

I have a question asking me for the crude isolated percent yield of 2,6-dimethylphenyl chloroacetamide

Hello there,

The word Crude is referred to the form of material obtained just after the completion of the reaction. It contains product, may contain some unreacted starting material, any side product or a impurity. Thus Crude needs to purified to obtain our final product (some times).

Now, Wet-weight (reffered when water was used in some stage of reaction) means the weight of crude which is in paste for or thick (containing solvent like water).

In such case, we place the material in oven to evaporate the solvent or water present. Now the weight of material after heating is reffered as Dry-weight of product.
