What causes greater than 100% yield?
A. Slow precipitation of aspirin
B. Wet aspirin
C. Dry aspirin
D. Rapid precipitation of aspirin
Please explain in detail
Wet aspirin contains aspirin compound as well as water. Thus the mass of wet aspirin include both of their masses which could be greater than the theoretical yield. In this case, the experimental yield is greater than the theoretical yield. Hence the percentage yield will be greater than 100%.
For example
Let's assume that the theoritcal yield is 0.5 g.
The mass of wet aspirin (aspirin +water or solvent) =0.62g.
Then the percentage yield = (experimental yield /theoritcal yield) *100
=124%.
Hence it is advisable to dry the product completely before finding the yield of the reaction
