what are Lipooligosaccharides and what role do they have in causing Guillain-Barre Syndrome?
Lipopolysaccharides (LPS) are defined as large molecules which has a lipid and a polysaccharide made up of O-antigen, outer core and inner core connected by a covalent bond; lipopolysaccharides are present in the outer membrane of Gram-negative bacteria.. They are also present on some enteric bacteria such as Campylobacter jejuni and Campylobacter coli strains.
Guillain-Barre syndrome, cause acute neuromuscular paralysis, which occurs after Campylobacter jejuni enteritis. Gangliosides are cell-surface glycolipids which are expressed highly in nervous tissue, with lipooligosaccharides which are components of the Gram-negative bacterium C. jejuni outer membrane. IgG antibodies to GM1 ganglioside are found in the serum from patients with Guillain-Barré syndrome.
