What role do the mitochondria have in aerobic cellular respiration?
Mitochondria are known as power houses of the cell. The aerobic phases of cellular respiration in eukaryotes occur within mitochondria. They are organelles that act like digestive systems which takes nutrients, break them down and creates energy rich molecules for the cell. The aerobic phases are krebs cycle and electron transport chain. They generate most of the cells supply of ATP. Two separate membranes are present in mitochondria. The inner membrane folds into cristae which divide the organelle into three compartments-innermembrane space, cristae space and the matrix. The aerobic respiration ie krebs cycle occurs in the matrix while glycolysis occurs in the cytoplasm of the cell.
