Nursing diagnosis :

Impaired Spontaneous Ventilation

In GBS as well as myasthenia gravis, the muscles of respiration becomes weak causing breathing impairements. Also the cough reflex becomes weak.

Nursing outcome

The nursing outcome is to maintain the respiratory rate of 12-20 breaths/min and oxygen saturation more than 92%.

Nursing intervention

1. Monitor the oxygen saturation through pulse oxymeter.

2. Regularly assess patient for signs of activity intolerance like dyspnea, shortness of breath, dizziness, palpitation.

3. Regularly monitor respiratory rate.

4. Position patient in such a way as gravity assists the breathing muscles.

5. Give breathing exercises to patient.

6. Teaching proper coughing techniques
