  • The topmost layer is O horizon and is rich in organic content.
  • The second layer is A horizon, made up of surface soil. Organic material is also abundant there.
  • The next layer is B horizon made up of Sub-surface soil. Plants' roots do penetrate to this level, however, the organic content is less than A horizon.
  • The next layer is C horizon, majorly made up of unweathered rocks. Very little or no organic content is present in this layer. It contains some soluble salts of Calcium or other minerals which are received due to leaching. Roots generally don't go to this depth and no microbe or organic compound is found there.
