what is the main cellular target of Bactrim, and explain your answer

Homework Answers

Answer #1

Answer: Main target of Bactrim is folate synthesis pathway

Bactrim is a combination of two antibiotics, sulfamethoxazole and trimethoprim. Both drugs inhibit folate synthesis pathway. Sulfamethoxazole induces its therapeutic effects by acting as a competitor of p-aminobenzoic acid (PABA) during the synthesis of dihydrofolate. Trimethoprim is a direct competitor inhibitor of the enzyme dihydrofolate reductase, which is required for tetrahydrofolate syntheisi.Tetrahydrofolate is necessary for DNA and protein production. Therefore bactrim inhibits folate synthesis to kill bacteria.
