Describe in 3-4 sentences how group selection could explain the evolution of altruism in eusocial insects

Homework Answers

Answer #1

Within a group, many individuals are altruists, who help for the sake of the group. But within the group, there may be one who is selfish and not helping others. This selfishness may be due to some selfish genes. This selfish individual does not do any good for the sake of the group but it takes all of the advantages that the group is having. Thus, it has a chance to reproduce also where other members do not have. Thus the group can be ended up with selfishness in totality. This can be termed as- Subversion from within.

Due to this reason, there is an evolution of altruism.
