Pianka devoted much effort to studying lizard assemblages in Spinifex grassland (Australia) at microhabitat scales. These studies demonstrate that lizard species partitioned Spinifex habitat into nocturnal & diurnal niches; arboreal , terrestrial, and fossorial niches; and microhabitat niches around Spinifex hummocks. He viewed in Spinifex grassland, lizard assemblages as stable group of species, modulated by biotic interaction and resource partitioning.
