Name 2 metabolites that are produced in the following catabolic pathways (i) Fatty acid oxiation to CO2 (ii) Transamination of alanine and oxidation of the alpha-keto acid to CO2 (iii) pentose phosphate pathway.

Homework Answers

Answer #1

(i) Fatty acid oxiation to CO2:

Acetyl Co A is the first metabolite produced by B-oxidation of fatty acids with even number of carbon atoms.

Propionyl Co A is the another metabolite produced by B-oxidation of fatty acids with odd number of carbon atoms.

But the final end products of Fatty acid oxiation catabolic pathways is water and CO2.

(ii) Transamination of alanine and oxidation of the alpha-keto acid to CO2:

The metabolites produced in the Transamination of alanine and oxidation of the alpha-keto acid to CO2 are Pyruvate and glutamate which are reversible.

Alanine aminotransferase catalyzes the transfer of the amino group of alanine to alpha ketoglutarate to form pyruvate and glutamate.

(iii) pentose phosphate pathway:

The metabolites produced in pentose phosphate pathway are pentose - 5 - phosphate and ribose - 5 - phosphate.
