Describe two metabolic steps of the metabolic network that can generate NAD+

Describe two metabolic steps of the metabolic network that can generate NAD+

Homework Answers

Answer #1

1. Conversion of pyruvate to lactate in a reaction catalysed by lactate dehydrogenase can regenerate NAD+. Under anerobic condition pyruvate is reduced to lactate by NADH and the NADH itself gets oxidized to NAD+

2. In triacylglycerol synthesis during conversion of dihydroxyacetone phosphate (DHAP) to Glycerol-3-phosphate NAD+ is regenerated from NADH. This reaction is catalysed by glycerol-3-phosphate dehydrogenase. The DHAP is reduced to glycerol-3-phosphate by NADH and it itself gets oxidized to NAD+

1.) Let’s use glucose as the metabolic fuel for aerobic respiration. How many ATPs would be formed if NAD+were the sole electron carrier cofactor formed throughout the metabolic pathways of glycolysis, the citric acid cycle, and oxidative phosphorylation? How many H+would have to be pumped from the intermembrane space and into the matrix for the ATP synthase to generate all of these ATPs? Answer question 2 (part a and b) but replace NAD+with FAD. Can manometers be used to record any metabolic gas exchange? For example, can they be used to measure CO2 production in yeast during fermentation (the equation for fermentation in yeast is C6H12O6 è 6CO2 + 2C2H5OH)? If so, do any steps need to be taken to ensure that pressure changes are attributable to CO2?
