what is the specific source of the oxygen that is generated in photosynthesis and at which step of the photosynthetic process does this occur?

Homework Answers

Answer #1

The source of oxygen during photosynthesis is H2O (water )

Van Neil performed an experiment by using purple sulphur bacteria and told that the source of liberated oxygen in photosynthesis is water and that was experimentally prooved by the experiment of Ruben,Hasid and kamen by using radioactive isotopes of oxygen i.e oxygen 18 .

(Earlier people thought that source of liberated oxygen in photosynthesis is Carbon di oxide not water )

The generation of oxygen takes place during light reactions of photosynthesis (reactions which takes place in presence of light ) . During the light reactions of photosynthesis water molecules break to release electron which is required by photosystem 2 and during bthid oxygen also released and this step bis named as photolysis of water or photocatalytic splitting of water.
