Similarities-

  • The basic similarity is in starting development. In case of both megagametophye of gymnosperm and endosperm of angiosperms, 1st of all Megaspore Mother cell is formed in nucellus.
  • Megaspore Mother cell undergo meiosis to form haploid megaspores.
  • Out of 4 megaspores, 3 degenerates and 1 remain functional.
  • This functional megaspore in both cases, increases in size.
  • Nucleus of Megaspore in gymnosperm divides mitotically by free nuclear divisions. Similarly nucleus of megaspore of angiosperms undergo 3 successive mitotic divisions.

Differences -

Megagametophye of gymnosperm represents endosperm.

  • Basic difference is that endosperm of gymnosperm is formed before fertilization while that of angiosperms is formed after fertilization.
  • Endosperm of gymnosperm is haploid and that of angiosperms is triploid.
