Q 3, Exposure of cells to X rays and gamma rays can cause which of the following?

pyrimidine dimers

base-pair substitutions

frameshift mutations

physical breaks in chromosomes

There should only be one answer, the most correct. Thank you!

Homework Answers

Answer #1

Ans : physical breaks in chromosomes.

There can be two types of radiations : Ionising and Non ionising radiations.

The X rays and gamma rays are the ionising radiations that cause the formation of ions and free radicals .These ions and free radicals are strong enough to break the covalent bonds , so they break the backbone of the DNA , and chop them into little pieces.

When the cell tries to bring together the chopped DNA , the mistakes are bound to happen , and hence mutations result.
