How we can prove that an oncogene can induce cancer progression?
Ans. An oncogene is a gene that has the potential to cause cancer . In tumor cell, these gene are often mutated ,or expressed at high level .Activated oncogene can cause cells designated for apoptosis (cell death) to survive and proliferation occur.
If, through mutation, normal genes promoting cellular growth are up- regulation ( gain of function mutation) , they will predispose the cell to cancer , thus they are termed oncogenes.
When proto- oncogene mutates or there are too many copies of it , become permanently turned on an activated when this happens, the cell grows out of control ,which can lead to cancer . This bad gene is called oncogene .
