The muscle is made up of multiple units called myofibrils. Myofibrils are fine parallel filaments present in sarcoplasm of muscle cell.
Each myofibril consists of a number of two alternating bands which are also called sections. These bands are -
Light band or I band
dark band or A band
The light band contains actin filament
The dark band contains myosin filament.
Arrangement of these bands- each myofibril consists of an alternate dark and light band. In the middle of A band, there is a light area called H zone. In the middle of H zone lies the middle part of myosin filament. This is called M line. M line is formed by myosin binding protein.
The head of the myosin binds with the actin filament to form cross bridges
During contraction, the actin filaments slides over the Myosin filament with the help of these cross bridges.
