As mentioned edema is a state of swelling of the body. Edema has many possible reasons. Venous insufficiency is one of the reason of edema. It is the weakening in the valves and veins. When a patient sitting or standing a lot of time in one place edema can happen. Infection cause edema in the body. Fluids from the blood that are infection fighting WBC are flowing towards the swollen area. Allergies are one of the main cause of edema. Food and insects bites are causing edema through allergies. Obstruction of flow can cause edema. A tumor blocking the path of blood or lymph through the blood vessels. Medications , pregnancy and other medical problems can cause edema in a patient. Eg: kidney failure, heart failure, head injury, stroke , diabetes, sunburn etc...
