How are satellite cells recruited and activated, and what function do they serve?
Satellite cells, also known as myosatellite cells are specialized potent cell which are found in muscles. These are precursors of muscle cells, and hence helps in formation of muscles.
These cells generally remain in dormant stage. But whenever there is any injury or stress encountered by the muscles, these cells gets activated and gets recruited at the site of injury.
When these cells gets activated, these enter the cell cycle and divide. Division of these cells make new muscle fibres (myofibrils) and these newly formed myofibrils add to the damaged cells. Thus, these satellite cells acts as stem cells and functions to redevelop and repair the damaged muscle fibres.
