Recommended level of exposure as per 8 hour day TWA by OSHA PEL varies based on the nature of the chemical substance which is being exposed to and the decibel of noise. There are many chemical substance starting from Acetaldehyde all the way to lead. Lead is a chemical substance that has permissible level of exposure which is less than or equal to 50 g/ m3 while noise is wone which has decibel of exposure that must be less than 90.

Another way to answer this question is that level of exposure is over the OSHA PEL when an employee is exposed to 3 times the level permissible which exceeds more than 30 minutes in an 8-hour shift or the number of times to which the employee is exposed to higher OSHA PEL level irrespective of time should be greater than 5. In both these circumstances, we can say that an employee's level of exposure is over the OSHA PEL.
