If it takes a bone 1 year to fully heal why do you think we only wear a cast for 6 weeks?
Following are the stages of FRACTURE HEALING:
1. Stage of Hematoma
2. Stage of granulation tissue
3. Stage of Callus (Earliest at 3 weeks)
4. Stage of Consolidation (Clinically bone is united)
5. Stage of Remodelling.
At stage 4 the bone is now clinically united which is between 6-8 weeks after the fracture. After that, stage of remodeling occurs which involves a process of readaptation of the skeleton to the loads which will be applied to it. This involves replacement of woven bone by lamellar bone. It take months for a bone to remodel completely. So at upto stage 4, plaster cast is required as before this stage the bones are not united and they require a support for proper union.
