How does the inner epithelial layer change as you pass from the nasal cavity down to alveoli? What is the functional reason for this change in the type of epithelial layer?
The conducting pathway of respiratory system i.e nasal cavity ,trachea, bronchi upto the terminal bronchioles are lined by pseudostratified ciliated columnar epithelium with goblet cells. The goblet cells are mucus secreting, so the dust particles, bacteria which are inhaled stick to the mucus , which is then swept upwards and away by the beating action of the cilia.
From the respiratory bronchiole to the alveoli, it is lined by simple squamous epithelium. This epithelium lining is very thin to help in diffusion of oxygen and CO2.
