Shebbie is a 15 year old female that has entered her last growth spurt. What is directing her bones and muscles to grow? How is her metabolism accommodating this change hormonally?
In female; the most important hormone responsible for growth spurt is estrogen .But it was found that exogenous administration of only estrogen do not bring about complete growth spurt.Growth hormone is also essential for growth. In addition; androstenedione also play an important role in the growth spurt.
These three hormones are mostly responsible for directing her bone to grow.So there is increased secretion of growth hormone from anterior pituitary. There is also increased secretion of GnRH from hypothalamus which leads to increased secretion of LH and FSH from anterior pituitary. This in turn leads to increased secretion of estrogen ,(some of which is converted to androstenedione).
