Briefly describe the dynamic of group polarization.

Homework Answers

Answer #1

Group polarisation refers to the tendency for a group to make decisions that are more extreme than the initial inclination of its members. For example, a group of White suprematists animal who hold moderate views about racism would demonstrate heightened racist beliefs following a group discussion. There are two main reasons why group polarization occurs. The first reason is due to the idea of social comparison. Individuals are compelled to adopt extreme views in order to assert his/her uniqueness and stand out from the others. Another reason why group polarization occurs is due to the persuasive arguments view. As a group discusses an issue, individuals are exposed to various arguments that support the issue at hand. The combination of supportive ideas intensifies their initial stance towards an issue.
