Utilitarians believe that any action should cause the greatest happiness for the greatest number, based on which the moral worth of the initial action should be determined. If we were to analyse Euthanasia from a Utilitarian perspective, we would need to investigate its impact on the patient along with others related to him/her. The level of pain and the progression of the disease would render the person unable to enjoy the activities that made his life pleasurable, so there could be no higher intellectual or emotional pleasures to balance the physical pain. If euthanasia is not permitted the person continues to suffer. It may also be the case that an individual’s suffering may increase with the passage of time. In contrast, his or her death will eliminate the suffering and thus misery is reduced. Moreover, his family and friends will be spared the pain of watching him suffer through a prolonged illness.
