Individual differences are found in every trait that we know, including that relating to the need for autonomy. Individuals who have a strong need for autonomy have a desire to make their own choices and be able to implement their decisions freely. When they are challenged in a way that restricts their sense of autonomy, they become rebellious and attempt to prove their independence. However, it is clear that is trait is not among all individuals. Many of us find more comfort abiding by rules and regulations, and being guided by our superiors. There are several others who get significantly influenced by social factors that include the desire to be liked and accepted by others. All these differences determine the extent to which an individual has a need for autonomy.
