Understanding the role of each member of your healthcare team is especially important when managing chronic illnesses. Knowing what each profession does and what the differences in roles will help you put patients at the center of everyone's work.

The healthcare team, whether you are receiving treatment in a large academic institution or a small rural private practice, is a team of professionals who contribute to your care and treatment as a patient. The usual members of the healthcare team are registered doctors and nurses. In some cases, there may be a substitute nurse or a doctor. In others, physical therapists, professional therapists, and social workers may be part of the team. Office managers also play an important role in the healthcare team.

Your doctor can:

Get a medical story
Update charts and patient information to show current findings and treatments
Order testing for nurses or other nursing staff to perform
Check test results for abnormal findings
Guide and develop treatment plans
Address concerns or answer questions that patients have regarding their health and well-being
Help patients maintain their health by discussing topics such as proper nutrition and hygiene
Diagnose and treat injuries or illnesses
Some doctors, such as surgeons, can operate patients to treat injuries

Go to your doctor for a preliminary medical diagnosis and treatment plan. Your doctor will gather a complete understanding of your condition and prescribe treatment options that he / she believes are most effective in managing your condition. Your doctor will follow you throughout your treatment to make sure your condition improves. Doctors may treat or transfer it to a registered nurse. It is the responsibility of the doctor to make sure that you receive the treatment and care that works best for you.
