Qualitative differences are those which are characterized by differences in processes, mechanisms and structures whereas quantitative distinctions are characterized by differences in amount or degree.

Substance use disorder is qualitatively different from normal because there is a difference in social relationships and interactions of a patient from a non-patient. A person suffering from this disorder often loses control of his/her thoughts and actions which lead to broken relationships both at home and at workplace.

Patients with substance use disorders have shown quantitatively different records from normal people as the rates of absenteeism at work, number accidents on road, amount health care claim costs, count of disciplinary actions, etc are more in case of a patient than a non-patient.
