Eating disorders are psychological disorders characterized by abnormal or disturbed eating habits and severe distress or concern about body weight and shape.

ANOREXIA NERVOSA

Anorexia nervosa are characterized by inadequate food intake leading to visible weight loss. This type of patient is intense fear of weight gain, obsession with weight and persistent behavior to prevent weight gain. The patient is induce vomiting after eating to reduce calories intake, they misuses laxatives and enema.

Signs and symptoms of anorexia nervosa

Physical symptoms include,

Amenorrhea, excessive weight loss ,lanugo, abdominal distension, dry and brittle hair, electrolytes disturbance ,nail biting, bluish discoloration ,dehydration, irregular heartbeat ,cold intolerance .

Emotional and psychological problems included,

Eat only safe food like fat free food, not willing to eat in public places, poor self-esteem related to body image, inability to appreciate the severity of disease ,social withdrawal, irritability ,insomnia, frequently check mirror, complaining about overweight.

Treatment of anorexia nervosa

Medical treatment :neuroleptics, appetite stimulants andantideprssents these all are the medication for anorexia nervous ,the effect is less.

Other care include,if the effects of disease is severe, hospitalization needed,

Monitor vital signs, hydration status and general condition.

Goal of treatment include restoration of body weight. Insertion of nasogastric tube and feeding is needed for this patient.

Psychotherapy

:individual psychotherapy _educate about disorders, focuses on cognitive behavioral therapy to maintain normal eating pattern and remove distorted believes.

:family therapy_participate family members to treat the problem .

Nursing interventions

:maintain intake and output chart and electrolytes balance

:encourage patient to verbalize feeling.

:avoid discussion focus on food.

:engages patient in therapeutic alliance to obtain commitment to treatment.

:sets a time limit for food.

:Provide assertive training .

:Assess suicide potential .
