Reflex action refers to a special ability that causes a rapid response in case we come across an object capable of causing us harm. This happens without us thinking. When a receptor is stimulated, it sends a signal to the central nervous system, where the brain co-ordinates the response. But sometimes a very quick response is needed, one that does not need the involvement of the brain. This is a reflex action. In other words, the sensory neuron directly connects to the motor neuron in the spinal cord and bypasses the cerebral cortex.
