What are some of the theories of language development? What are the various types of language communication other than the spoken form?
There are two major theories of language development. Nativist
theorists such as Noam Chomsky argue that language development is
an innate capacity and human beings are birn with a language
faculty. Nativists focus primarily on the physiological and
biological endowment of the child and how these impact language
acquisition. On the other hand, behaviourists such as B.F. Skinner
regard language development as a form of learning. According to
this perspective, language is a complex behaviour that is acquired
from the environment. With respect to language development
theories, there is also the interactionist view held by theorists
such as Lev Vygotsky which emphasize the effects of both, biology
and environment.
