Briefly describe the difference between reinforcement and punishment in operant conditioning.
In operant conditioning a behavior is conditioned based on the consequences that follow the action.
Reinforcements are consequences that strenghen a behavior.
Positive reinforcements are when a behavior we want repeated is rewarded with a desirable consequence.Ex-permission to go out and play after completing homework.
Negative reinforcement is the removal of an undesirable stimulus to strengthen avoidance or escape behavior.for example wearing warm clothes to escape freezing cold.
Punishments are consequences which seek to reduce or decrease a behavior.
Positive punishment -when behavior is followed by an aversive stimuli. Ex- scolding from teacher when making noise
Negative Punishment- when a desirable stimulus is removed as a consequence of an undesirable behavior. Ex- confiscating a child's toys till they eat their lunch.
