This is a Theater/Art question. Because I don't see that subject, so I'd just chose one in soical sciences.
During the times of Shakespeare, how did the Globe Theatre announce that the plays were taking place? And how did they distinguish the type of play?
During Shakespeare’s era, many of the people were still unable to read and write. Therefore, the Globe Theatre used flags as a simple yet convenient device to advertise which play was to be performed that day. A raised flag was the signal that a play would be performed that afternoon and continued to fly until the end of the performance. The flags featured pictures indicating which play was being staged. Sometimes, different colors were used which indicate the genre of the play being staged, that is, whether the play was based on comedy, tragedy or history.
