How does our language affect how we think?
Language is the most important factors that separate human beings from animals. Language helps a person speak or write whatever they think. It is believed that language enables thinking and the other way round language expresses one’s thoughts thus making both complementary to each other rather than dependent on each other.
For example when one thinks, the thoughts become words. These words are further joined together to express a complete thought. The form could be either spoken or written and they both are considered to be the productive skills. Another example is that one’s thinking ability is enabled and enhanced when they read or listen something as they are considered to be the enablers and receptive skills.
The richness of the vocabulary and content knowledge improves the way we think and express those thoughts. The amount of language helps one involve in higher order thinking otherwise their thinking will be limited to lower order thinking. If one needs to move to analyze, evaluate and synthesize their thought process with the information they have. People with lower level language skills won’t be able to think beyond a certain level.
